PURPOSE: A liquid crystal optical switch element is provided to simply manufacture the optical switch element and mass-produce the optical switch elements by applying a cholesteric liquid crystal film. CONSTITUTION: A cholesteric liquid crystal layer splits light into right circularly polarized light and left circularly polarized light for reflecting one wave while transmitting the other wave. A quarter-wave plate is arranged at a liquid cell for converting the two waves into linearly polarized light. The converted waves are modulated through the liquid crystal cell according to voltage application. The modulated lights are combined by being passed through the cholesteric liquid crystal layer.
