A process for producing (R)-3-hydroxy-3-(2-phenylethyl)hexanoic acid characterized in that racemic 3-hydroxy-3-(2-phenylethyl)hexanoic acid is optically resolved by using an optically active amine represented by the following general formula (VIII): (VIII) wherein R2 represents 3,4- dimethoxyphenyl or 2-chlorophenyl. Thus, (R)-3-hydroxy-3-(2- phenylethyl)hexanoic acid useful as a material of drugs can be efficiently produced at a high optical purity and a relatively high total yield.
