PURPOSE: A method for discriminating a disk in an optical disk device is provided to set a basic light volume related to a disk and adjust a judgement reference value by a difference with the basic light volume, thereby preventing an error due to the discrimination of the disk. CONSTITUTION: An optical disk device compares a reflection volume from a loaded disk with a basic light volume of a reference disk(201). A threshold value to discriminate a kind of the disk is adjusted by the result of the comparison, and the threshold value is stored in a memory(202). If a disk is inserted into the optical disk device, a focus error signal is converted into a digital value through an A/D(Analog to Digital) converter to be inputted to a micro controller(204). The micro controller confirms whether the reflection volume according to the detected focus error signal is more than a judgement reference value(205). If so, the disk is confirmed as a CD-R(206). Otherwise, the disk is confirmed as a CD-RW(207). A playback operation reading data is executed to the disk through a laser diode and a focus lens appropriate for the disk(208).
