PURPOSE: An anticancer agent containing a topoisomerase inhibitor, together with nitroimidazole as an effective ingredient to induce apoptosis regardless of oxygen conditions is provided. Therefore, the agent can be used in treatment of almost all kinds of cancers regardless of oxygen conditions, in particular a solid cancer tumor forming low oxygen conditions. CONSTITUTION: The anticancer agent comprises nitroimidazole; a topoisomerase inhibitor; and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. The nitroimidazole is pimonidazole, misonidazole, etanidazole or ornidazole and the topoisomerase inhibitor is doxorubicin, mitomycin C, camptothecin, novobiocin, epirubicin, dactinomycin or etoposide. The effective amount of the nitroimidazole and topoisomerase inhibitor against cancer cells of 2.5x10¬5 cells/ml is 100 to 1,000microgram/ml and 0.1 to 100 1,000microgram/ml respectively.
