Anode material comprises an oxide of formula: Ln(n-a)AaBO4 (where Ln = rare earth metal; A = alkaline earth metal; B = transition metal; a = 0.1-1.5; and n = 1.6-2). The oxide has a layer structure in which a perovskite layer borders a layer which is not a perovskite layer. Preferred Features: The rare earth metal is La, Ce, Pr and/or Gd. The alkaline earth metal is Sr, Ca and/or Ba. The transition metal is Ni, Mn, Fe and/or Co. The oxide is especially La1.3Sr0.5NiO4-x.
