Device for holding an elastic sleeve (2) open while it is fitted over a group of cables comprises a spiral-shaped thermoplastic profile. The windings (3) of this are bonded together in some areas (4) and the thermoplastic is cross-linked in these areas. An Independent claim is included for a method for making the device comprising: (a) extruding a profile from a thermoplastic; (b) at least partially crosslinking the profile; (c) winding it on to a shaft to form a spiral; (d) heating the windings to their softening point, cooling and removing the spiral.
