The invention relates to the use of compounds of formula (I) R-COO(CH2CH2O)nH (I) wherein R represents a linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated, alkyl or alkylene radical comprising between 5 and 21 C atoms, and n is a number between 0.5 and 1.5, as smoothing agents for synthetic and natural fibres, preferably for wool fibres.
