A control unit (12) controls the torque called for by operation of an accelerator pedal (15) by reference to a family of model characteristics held in a memory (13), based on the accelerator depression, crankshaft and/or vehicle speed. An electric drive (18), e.g. a starter, coupled to the crankshaft through gears (19) is connected to a second control unit (17). When a change from a torque characteristic is required this drive is controlled to provide the torque necessary to maintain crankshaft speed. The value of this torque provides a measure by which the torque control unit has to be adjusted to provide the torque called for.
