In a process to apply a glaze finish to paper, a web (12) of paper is rolled onto a spool and subsequently surrendered to a glazing stage. During discharge from the spool and prior to glazing, the paper is especially moistened to a state at which it the moisture value is higher than it was immediately prior to winding onto the spool. The paper web is surrendered from a spool forming part of a papermaking machine (14) and is then wound off for the final-stage glazing treatment. The moisture level applied depends upon a - quality parameter for the final glaze. The glazing process is an off-line operation. An Independent claim is also included for a commensurate moistening assembly.
