Sludge is injected under high pressure into a chamber (1) containing fixed horizontal and vertical parts (6, 7) and a rotary grate (8), breaking up the jet into water and sludge particles. A fan blows the water particles towards the bottom of the device, whilst the relatively heavy sludge particles adhere to a conveyor belt (11). A separator apparatus for removing water from a sludge injects the latter under high pressure into a chamber containing fixed horizontal and vertical parts, in addition to a rotary grate, which break up the jet into water and sludge particles. A fan blows the water particles towards the bottom of the device against the flow of the sludge jet, whilst the relatively heavy sludge particles adhere to a conveyor belt, forming a layer of sludge on top of the latter. A flow of air (12) directed in the opposite direction to the belt machine direction can be used to blow back any water entrained with the sludge particles. At least one press roll (13) is used to remove water from the sludge on the belt and a scraper blade (15) is used to remove the dried sludge, which is supplied to a feed hopper (16) for a standard block press. The blocks of sludge are finally dried with air.
