A single-seat electric vehicle, e.g. for use by the handicapped or elderly, has driven rear wheels, steerable front wheels and a battery unit 700 between right and left frame members 107. The batteries are cylindrical, arranged in rows and in a case which is substantially the same height as the frame members and arranged under a floor supported by the frame members. They may be lithium ion batteries. Also supported on the frame members are either one or two brake pedals 800, actuating cam-operated drum brakes on the rear wheels through cables. Where separate pedals 800L and 800R are provided for each rear wheel the brakes can be used differentially to aid steering.
