A text-to-speech system includes a text parser for receiving a sequence of characters representing an input text and establishing markers that divide the sequence of characters into a sequence of audible sections, a text-to-speech reader coupled to the text parser and having a directable pointer for identifying an audible section that the text-to-speech reader shall convert into artificial speech, and a voice controlled user interface in communication with the text-to-speech reader for allowing a user to direct the pointer to a desired marker.
