PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new optically activeα-alkylfluoro-, trifluoromethyl- or trifluoromethoxy-substituted benzyl alcohol which is an important intermediate for medicines and agrochemicals, and to provide a means capable of efficiently producing the compound. SOLUTION: The optically activeα-alkylfluoro-, trifluoromethyl- or trifluoromethoxy-substituted benzyl alcohol is efficiently produced by asymmetrically alkylating a fluoro-, trifluoromethyl- or trifluoromethoxy-substituted benzaldehyde with a dialkyl zinc in the presence of an asymmetric catalyst prepared from optically active taddoles and tetraisopropoxytitanium.
