摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a functional element having extreme excellency in storage stability applicable to various applications of recording elements, memory devices, etc. <P>SOLUTION: This functional element comprises a metal nano-rod fixed on a solid substrate surface or in a high polymer film in which the form of the metal nano-rod is changed as external energy is applied, and in which spectral characteristics are changed in accordance with the form change of the metal nano-rod. The application of the external energy is preferably made by the radiation of a polarized pulse laser beam having a wavelength equivalent to a plasmon absorbing band of the longer axis or shorter axis of the metal nano- rod.
