PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the set content of imaging conditions without causing any increase in size or cost and any decrease in the operating efficiency of a serial printer. SOLUTION: A stopper 7c is provided in a part of an operating lever 7 for moving a carriage 1 mounting an ink cartridge 3 selectively to a lower position corresponding to a plain sheet or an upper position corresponding to a thick sheet. The stopper 7c is exposed to a position where the operating lever 7 abuts against a protrusion 1c projecting from the right side face of the carriage 1 located at the upper position on the right end side in the main scanning direction, i.e., the reciprocating direction of the carriage 1. A decision can thereby be made whether the carriage 1 is located at the upper position or the lower position by detecting the stop position of the carriage 1 when it is moved to the right end side based on the data of timing fence read out by means of a sensor provided in the carriage 1.
