PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aqueous resin dispersion which makes it possible to form a coating film excellent in water resistance, particularly resistance to whitening by hot water, blocking resistance, and resistance to freezing damage, and its production process. SOLUTION: The process for producing the aqueous resin dispersion involves multiple emulsion polymerization steps in which plural polymerizable monomer components different in glass transition temperature (Tg) are used, wherein it is essential that a monomer component having a highest Tg is used in the first emulsion polymerization step, a monomer component having a lowest Tg is used in the final emulsion polymerization step, the difference in Tg between the component having a highest Tg and the component having a lowest Tg is a certain value or higher, the ratio of the component having a highest Tg and the component having a lowest Tg used is in a specified range, and a polymerizable monomer component containing a specified silylated monomer is used in at least one of the emulsion polymerization steps, and/or a specified silylated compound is added after the emulsion polymerization steps.
