PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To set a format flexibly in a fixed length mode. SOLUTION: When a transition is made to a format alteration mode, print length of block data is calculated in a candidate format selectable as an altered format (S1). A candidate format having a calculated print length longer than the block length is displayed while being discriminated from a candidate format having a calculated print length shorter than the block length (S1). When the print length calculated by the calculating means is longer than the block length, a value longer than the calculated print length is displayed as an alteration candidate block length (S5).
