PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for swelling a cell membrane of sludge- dehydrated cake and a method for carbonizing the swelled cake. SOLUTION: The sludge-dehydrated cake is swelled by jetting superheated steam toward the cake to boil the moisture content in the cell membrane of the cake.
