PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive printer with a less number of parts, using one optical sensor for detecting the existence or not of paper sheets set on a body and the remainder of the paper sheets set on the body. SOLUTION: When the paper sheets 10 set on a paper cassette 11 are delivered and carried through a carrying passage 13, a light shielding plate 22 is turned. The light shielding plate 22 has a plurality of opening portions 30 formed therein and the turning amount of the light shielding plate 22 is detected by the optical sensor 21. The light shielding plate 22 has two levers 31, 32 mounted thereon so that its turning amount is decreased in proportion as the paper sheets 10 set on the paper cassette 11 are increased. A control part 1 detects the existence or not of the paper sheets in the paper cassette 11 and the remainder of the paper sheets therein from the turning amount of the light shielding plate 22 after starting the delivery operation of the paper sheets set on the paper cassette 11.
