PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately set a proper preload on angular ball bearings supporting a pinion shaft in a short time. SOLUTION: A preload cap 5 is screwed into a holding hole 40 of the angular ball bearing 4 supporting the pinion shaft 2 on the side apart from its protruded portion to the outside of a pinion housing H<SB>2</SB>, out of the pair of angular ball bearings 3, 4 supporting the pinion shaft 2 at both sides of a pinion 20, and is fixed with a fastening lock nut 52. The angular ball bearing 4 is thrust toward the other angular ball bearing 3 to provide the preload for both angular ball bearings 3, 4. The provision of the preload can be carried out while applying rotating force to the protruded portion of the pinion shaft 2, and the proper preload for good rotation of the pinion shaft 2 can be set accurately in a short time.
