PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup unit and image pickup method for employing an imaging element adopting an interlace transfer system so as to reduce the image processing time from a first image pickup of the image pickup unit until next image pickup. SOLUTION: Data of stored electric charges in a CCD 1 are divided into three fields, and data of the first field are transferred. Feature data of the image are extracted by a CCD-I/F 3a in a signal processing section 3 via an image pickup processing section 2. Further, a storage section 4 stores the transfer data. All data of RGB signals of pixels are transferred at the end of transfer of data of the first field and the feature data are acquired. A control value is calculated from the feature data just after start of transfer of the data of the second field. The RGB signal data stored in the storage section 4 are given to a YUV (luminance and color difference signals) conversion section 3c, where the data are converted into YUV signal data on the basis of the feature data at the end of transfer of the data in the second and third fields, a compression processing section 3d compresses the converted data into data with the JPEG format, and header data or the like are attached to the data subjected to JPEG compression and an external storage section 4' stores the resulting data.
