PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a moving picture recording method and its reproducing method capable of efficiently realizing high-speed reproduction of video/audio data subjected to variable length compression. SOLUTION: In the case of multiplexing compressed video and audio data and recording the resulting data on a disk or a semiconductor memory, a head position of packets, a start position of GOP that is a set of a plurality of recorded frames, an end position of an in-frame encoded frame or more by each GOP, or an end position of a forward prediction encoded frame or more are collected to create a management file, and the management file is recorded on the medium in addition to the multiplexed data. The multiplexed data are read and reproduced at a high-speed by referencing the management file to designate the read start position and the end position of the disk. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
