PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a radiation image reading and erasing device and a method therefor by which time required to erase an image on a stimulable phosphor sheet is shortened, and the remaining inerasable image of afterimage information after erasion is reduced. SOLUTION: In the case of erasing the afterimage of X-ray image information in a return path, spot light outputted from a laser beam source 100 is made to scan on a scanning line 103 before radiating the luminous flux of an erasing lamp 130, so that the afterimage before radiating the luminous flux of the lamp 130 is reduced and also the radiating time of the luminous flux of the lamp 130 is shortened. Since the remaining inerasable image of the afterimage exists on the sheet 140 at high-dosage photographing time even after radiating the luminous flux of the lamp 130, the spot light outputted from the light source 100 is made to scan on the scanning line 103 before radiating the luminous flux of the lamp 130, whereby the remaining inerasable image of the afterimage is reduced.
