A piece of fabric folded and all or part of the fabric is subjecting to the action of an absorbent material impregnated with dyes, followed by an operation to enable the dyes to permeate through the fabric. The dyes can be in pouches or in absorbent materials inserted between the folds in different zones or geometrical patterns. The procedure comprises folding a piece of fabric (1) in a series of folds (1a) and subjecting all or part of the fabric to the action of an absorbent material impregnated with different dyes (2, 3, 4), followed by an operation, e.g. steeping in water at a predetermined temperature, to enable the dyes to permeate through the fabric. The dyes can be in pouches or in absorbent materials such as salt or pieces of sponge inserted between the folds in the material in different zones or geometrical patterns. When using salt, the dye can be diluted at a rate of 1-30 g to a liter of water, and 1-30 cl of the solution to 1 kg of salt. Following the steeping operation, which is optional, depending on the type of fabric and the desired color effect, the fabric is dried.
