A copolymer with a hydrocarbon backbone comprising at least two groups having solar filter and/or antioxidant activity covalently bonded within, onto or at the ends of the backbone and at least two groups capable of establishing hydrogen bonds which is solid at ambient temperature, soluble in a hydrocarbon oil at 25-250degreesC, has a weight average mol.wt. below 10000 and is capable of gelling the oil The groups capable of establishing a hydrogen bond are ester, amide, sulfonamide, carbamate, thiocarbamate, urea, thiourea, oxamido, guanidino, biguanidino and combinations of them. At least one of the groups is not ester. An Independent claim is included for a cosmetic or dermatological composition comprising a hydrocarbon oil and sufficient of the claimed copolymer to gel the oily phase. The two together forming a physiologically acceptable medium.
