PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dielectric actuator which has a light weight, small dimensions, and a high output and is suitable for robots, artificial arms, etc. SOLUTION: A composite unit, composed of high dielectric constant members 221 and low dielectric constant insulation members 222 which are arranged alternately, is employed as a mover 220 and a large number of electrode pairs 216 are arranged on stators 212 and 214. As the material of the high dielectric constant member 221, for instance, a ceramic material like barium titanate (having a dielectric constant of 5,500) can be used. As the material of the low dielectric constant insulation member 222, for instance, epoxy resin and the like can be used. If a four-phase rectangular wave power supply is applied to the electrode pairs, a traveling wave electric field is generated between the stator electrodes, so that the mover is moved continuously by the changing electric field. If the space between the stator electrodes is filled with a dielectric liquid 230 having a low dielectric constant, it contributes to increase in the force generated by the mover 220.
