PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable resistor having a position sensing function, capable of sensing its arrival at a prescribed position through a single movable piece (movable contact). SOLUTION: The variable resistor has a travelling contact 7 acting in link with an operating member 2 and connected to an output terminal 42, a plurality of fixed contacts 25-29 arranged on the insulated substrate 3 along the sliding track of the movable contact 7, external resistors 33-36 each connected in between two of the fixed contacts 25-29, power source terminal 41 connected to one end of a series of the connected fixed contacts 25-29, a ground terminal 44 connected at least to the ground side end of the fixed point 29 at the other end of the series of contacts, position sensing fixed contact 22 to be connected to the ground side fixed contact 29 when the movable contact 7 arrives at the contact 29, and a switch terminal 43 connected to the position sensing fixed contact 22.
