PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal aligning agent with which a liquid crystal alignment layer formed by being subjected to alignment treatment by an optical alignment method and having alignment regulating force as well as pretilt angle developing stability can be obtained, to provide a method for forming the liquid crystal alignment layer using the liquid crystal aligning agent and to provide a liquid crystal display element having the liquid crystal alignment layer and excellent display characteristics. SOLUTION: There are provided: the liquid crystal aligning agent having a structure which can be crosslinked by light and a structure with which a pretilt angle is developed and a structure which can be crosslinked by heat; the method for forming the liquid crystal alignment layer by using the liquid crystal aligning agent; and the liquid crystal display element having the liquid crystal alignment layer.
