<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bidirectional output buffer having improved performance characteristics. <P>SOLUTION: The bidirectional output buffer includes an active terminal, by which a drive impedance and a receiving impedance are isolated. The buffer provides at least a driving mode and a receiving mode. In the driving mode, the output impedance of the buffer is calibrated to a specified strength. In the receiving mode, the buffer is calibrated to another specified impedance as the active end.
