PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup unit and an image pickup method for employing an imaging element adopting an interlace transfer system so as to perform image processing by transfer data with the number of fields in accordance with the number of recorded pixels in mode setting thereby reducing the processing time. SOLUTION: A storage section 4 stores the transfer data from a CCD 1 in the order of first, second and third fields via an image pickup processing section 2 and a signal processing section 3, and a YUV conversion section 3c converts RGB signals stored in the storage section 4 storing the transfer data of each field into YUV signals at the detection of end of transfer of each field depending on the setting of low, medium, and high resolution setting of a photographing confirming image. A display section 6 displays the photographing confirming image of the transfer data of the first field and a thumbnail picture. Further, when the resolution is set low, the data of the YUV signal are read from the storage section 4 and an external storage section 4' stores the data of the YUV signal compressed in the JPEG format with header data or the like attached to them at a compression processing section 3d. When the resolution is medium, the image is processed by using the transfer data of the first and second fields at the end of transfer of the second field. When the resolution is high, the image is processed by using the transfer data of the first, second and third fields at the end of transfer of the third field data. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
