PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which can prevent the degradation in color reproducibility by a difference in the transmission wavelength characteristics of red light of a negative film and a positive film without selectively switching and using light controllable filters to be respectively exclusively used for both of the filters. SOLUTION: The image reader 1 has a light source formed by combining a halogen lamp 2 and the light controllable filter Fp or the positive film to emit the light corresponding to the wavelength of the transmission wavelength band of the positive film, a beam splitter 6, a first CCD line sensor 7 and a second CCD line sensor 8 and irradiates the respective CCD line sensors 7 and 8 through the beam splitter 6 with the image light obtained by irradiating a film P with the light of the light source, in which the beam splitter 6 sorts the light of the wavelength below the lower limit of the transmission wavelength band of the red light of the negative film to the first CCD line sensor 7 and the light of the wavelength above the lower limit of the transmission wavelength band to the second CCD line sensor 8 and irradiates both of the sensors with the light of these wavelength bands.
