PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner with an economically extended service life of a product by saving the driving time of an inverter compressor having a variable compression speed, and a method of controlling the air conditioner. SOLUTION: This air conditioner comprises an indoor unit, an outdoor unit having a first compressor with variable compression speeds and a second compressor with a constant compression speed, and a control part operating only the first compressor when a load on the indoor unit is less than 50-α% of the maximum load on the indoor unit where a reference value larger than 0 and smaller than 50 isα, operating only the second compressor when a load on the indoor unit is within the range of 50-α% to 50+α% of the maximum load on the indoor unit, and simultaneously operating the first and second compressors when a load on the indoor unit is more than 50+α% of the maximum load on the indoor unit.
