PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader and an image reading method capable of improving the efficiency of an image recognition by shortening an image reading time. SOLUTION: This image reader reading an optical image of a photographing object by a camera 9 with a line sensor 11 stores information related to a plurality of intake ranges of the image by the line sensor 11 in a storage part 13, collates the information related to a single intake range by a pixel selecting part 10 to select a pixel outputting an image signal, outputs the image signal from the selected pixel alone, receives a changeover signal from a facility control part 25 of a whole control device 20, and changes over the information related to the intake range referred by the pixel selecting part 10 to the information related to another intake image. This constitution can shorten the image reading time so as to improve the efficiency of the image recognition. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
