PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method employing a form described in the title, thereby allowing an internal combustion engine to be driven with a small amount of fuel and extending a service life of a first fuel pump. SOLUTION: A preload is reduced from an original value provided based on a standard temperature-pressure relation formula. When cavitation in a second fuel pump exceeds a permissible amount, the reduction in the preload is terminated and a difference between the original preload value and the reduced preload is used for adaptation of the standard temperature-pressure relation formula.
