The swimming pool shell consists of a continuous side wall (12) sealed to base panel and made from an extruded strip (28) of a first thermoplastic material, e.g. 200 mm wide and 20 mm thick, wound in a spiral on a rotating mandrel (40) so that each winding (42a, 42b, 42c) is closely connected to the adjoining one by fusion, and welding a base panel of a second thermoplastic material to the side wall's lower edge. The extruded plastic strip can be reinforced e.g. by a glass fibre strip with a third thermoplastic material, integrated in the winding strip in the extrusion stage or by winding it onto the outer surface of the first thermoplastic strip on the mandrel. The extruded strip can also contain an additive such as an anti-algae agent, a pigment or anti-static agent, and the rotation of the mandrel is regulated so that its thickness is kept constant.
