PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus, an image processing method, a recording medium, and a program allowing a viewer to clearly recognize characters without causing unnaturalness in comparison with a color of an original image in the case of previewing a color image including a character area. SOLUTION: Image area discrimination is applied to an original image as to whether or not each pixel in the original image belongs to the character area when scanning the original image or in an optional timing later, a color reduction means to store and emphasize the character area is applied to the character area according to the result, and color reduction processing is applied to areas other than the character area by using a color reduction means with high reproducibility of color such as an error diffusion method.
