PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a portable telephone set which makes characters easy to read and buttons easy to press and which has superior portability. SOLUTION: A folding type portable telephone set is constituted by dividing its main body into two housings 10A and 10B so that the housings are freely opened and closed through a hinge 1. The housings are in such a thin and long shape that the width is≤1/5 as long as the length and the hinge is provided on the width side. A display part 11 provided to one of the housings is in such a thin and long shape that the width is≤1/5 as long as the length and characters 12 which are displayed thereon are arrayed along the length. An operation part 15 provided to the other housing is also in such a thin and long shape that the width is≤1/5 as long as the length and at least number parts among operation buttons 16 arranged thereon are arrayed along the length.
