PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sample rack transferring mechanism having a structure resistant to step-out and damage even when other external force is applied while transferring a sample rack. SOLUTION: The sample rack laterally transferring device comprises a transferring path 12 connecting a transfer starting unit 12A, a processing unit 12B, and a transfer terminating unit 12C; and a laterally transferring mechanism transferring a sample rack and arranged on the transferring path. The transferring path comprises a flat table 14 and side walls 20, 21 guiding a transferring direction. The table is provided with notches 15, 16, 17 along the transferring path. The laterally transferring mechanism comprises a slider arranged under the table and capable of moving along the transferring path, and a transfer driving unit for the slider. The slider is provided with a protrusion 53 capable of taking two states: a state where it protrudes from the notch over the table such that it becomes capable of abutting on the sample rack, or a state where it is immersed under the table such that the abutting state is released. The protrusion is configured such that it is immersed under the condition that external force other than the direction of transferring sample rack is applied. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
