An auxiliary engine (1) for an automotive vehicle (25) having a main engine (30), the auxiliary engine (1) being of a type having at least one set of opposed, aligned cylinders and associated pistons which are linked to an output shaft so that the pistons of the set reciprocate together always in the same instantaneous direction without relative movement between the pistons. The auxiliary engine (1) coupled to a generator for providing the substantive electrical power requirements of the vehicle, and wherein the auxiliary engine is mechanically separated from the main engine.
