The method involves carrying out magnetic resonance measurement of a region of interest and displaying an image of a layer definable in position/orientation after acquiring a 2D or 3D overview image of at least part of the object. An envelope of the part is automatically derived from the overview image and minimal measurement field dimensions are automatically computed from the definable layer position/orientation taking into account the envelope. The method involves carrying out an image generating magnetic resonance measurement of a region of interest and displaying a layer image of a layer definable in position and orientation, whereby a two- or three-dimensional overview image is first acquired of at least part of the object. An envelope of the part of the object is automatically derived from the overview image and the dimensions of a minimal measurement field are automatically computed from the position and orientation of the definable layer taking into account the envelope.
