The method involves monitoring the input and output port of an Asynchronous Transfer Mode or ATM layer/switching unit connection-specifically so that the ATM cells transferred between the port and a physical layer component are counted and the counter value produced is compared with a predefined value. Independent claims are also included for the following: a test arrangement for monitoring connections in an ATM network and an ATM network.
