AQUEOUS COATING COMPOSITION AND METHOD FOR FORMATION OF MULTILAYER COATING FILM

A water-based coating composition which gives a coating film having a satisfactory visual appearance and excellent flip-flop characteristics. It comprises: an aqueous resin dispersion obtained by solution-polymerizing a liquid monomer mixture (A) having an acid value of 30 to 150 and a hydroxy value of 10 to 100 in an organic solvent to synthesize a copolymer solution, converting the copolymer solution into an aqueous solution, removing the organic solvent therefrom under vacuum to obtain an aqueous resin solution for emulsion polymerization, and then emulsion-polymerizing a liquid monomer mixture (B) having an acid value up to 20 and a hydroxy value up to 100 with the aid of the aqueous resin solution for emulsion polymerization as a protective colloid to synthesize a core resin surrounded by the protective colloid; and a brightening agent. The aqueous resin solution for emulsion polymerization may be obtained by subjecting the liquid monomer mixture (A) to aqueous solution polymerization in water.
