A camshaft position is recorded continuously in a defined time slot via an absolute-angle transmitter (AAT). For each recorded camshaft position, a value is determined for a matching crankshaft position. A value is also determined for a current crankshaft position by extrapolation and an adjustment value is taken into account when detected as an angle error in the AAT during normal operation.
