A sheet feeding apparatus including a sheet container for containing sheets, a sheet stacking table provided in the sheet container and movable up and down with the sheets stacked thereon, a lift device for moving up the table to a position in which the feeding of the stacked sheets becomes possible and holding it in that position, a releasing device for releasing the holding of the table by the lift device so as to move down the sheet stacking member, and a downward movement speed controller having a spring for downwardly biasing the table when the table is moved down, and an oil damper for reducing the downward movement speed of the sheet stacking member, and controlling the downward movement speed of the table, the spring being designed such that its biasing force becomes greater as the height position of the table held by the lift device is higher.
