Press felt for a papermaking machine has support made up of layers (3, 4, 5) of parallel fibers (6, 7, 8). These have spacer fibers between them which are soluble in a solvent which does not dissolve the parallel fibers. An Independent claim is also included for a method for making the felt in which spacer fibers as described above are embedded between the parallel fibers and are dissolved from between them.
