PURPOSE: A measuring tape locking device for a tape measure is provided to fix the measuring tape released from a housing in an extended position by inserting a stopper with a coil spring to retain the measuring tape frictionally. CONSTITUTION: A locking lever(14) is hinged on the housing(10). A cylinder(16) with a coil spring(17) is coupled to an end of a connecting piece(15) extended from the locking lever(14). A wedged stopper(18) is attached at one end of the cylinder(16). When a measuring tape(12) is withdrawn from a housing(10), the wedged stopper(18) retains the measuring tape(12) frictionally in an expended position. And by pressing the locking lever(14), the measuring tape(12) is retracted smoothly into the housing(10).
