<p>A video signal is subjected to character extraction 13 techniques in order to identify and enhance text in video images. The text undergoes different processing to the main picture signal in order that the text does not suffer from loss of quality during image compression prior to transmission. The text is therefore transmitted 15 separately to a receiver and is recreated on the display in a manner that retains a high enough quality that enable it to be readable. The technique is usable in environments where transmission bandwidth is limited, thereby allowing the main picture signal to be compressed without affecting the quality of the text.</p> |
