The method involves determining reference time points at which a reference tool enters the range of a measuring beam during rotation. A measuring system is synchronized with the rotation of the tool, based on the sequence of detected signals. The detection is subsequently only performed during selected detection intervals that include a reference time point, thereby preventing measurement errors. An Independent claim is included for a measuring system for checking the geometry of a cutting edge of a tool.
