PURPOSE: Provided are a water purification system using chlorine dioxide for completely sterilizing tap water which is not completely sterilized by chlorine in water works and a method for controlling the system. CONSTITUTION: The system comprises a first, a second, a third and a fourth tanks(10a,10b,10c,10d) for storing hydrochloric acid (HCl), sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), sodium chlorite (NaClO2) and chlorine dioxide (ClO2), respectively, therein; a mixer(20) for producing chlorine dioxide solution by mixing hydrochloric acid, sodium hypochlorite and sodium chlorite; a flow meter(30) for detecting mixing status of hydrochloric acid, sodium hypochlorite and sodium chlorite and detecting current flow rate of chlorine dioxide which produced by the mixing; a PLC(40) for checking amount of remained chemicals of the first to third tanks(10a,10b,10c), converting the checked data into digital signals, real-time checking amount of chlorine dioxide produced by the mixing, storing the checked data, and transmitting the data to a central computer(50), the central computer(50) for displaying digital data transmitted from the PLC on a monitor so as to make an operator monitor chlorine dioxide mixing status; and a concentration detecting sensor(60) for detecting and adjusting chlorine dioxide concentration.
