PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a novel intermediate which is useful to simplify the production of a phenolic cyan color forming coupler to reduce its cost, and to provide a route for its synthesis. SOLUTION: A 6-acylamino-5-substituted benzoxazol-2-one having structural formula I (wherein Y and R' are as defined in the specification) is provided. A method for producing a 2-equivalent phenolic cyan color forming coupler comprises (1) deprotecting the compound of formula I by the hydrolysis of the benzoxazolone ring and (2) N-acylating the deprotected compound to attach an R''CO group to the amine in position 2.
